I’m your host, Kelly Morgan, indie author and indie publisher. Welcome to another episode of The Author’s Mic.
Today, I’m going to say something that might ruffle a few feathers — but it’s important to be honest with my fellow authors:
I am not paying you to read my book.
If that means fewer reviews, fewer features, or fewer fake connections, I am 100% okay with that.
The Reality for Indie Authors
As an indie author, I wear every single hat. I am the creator, the marketer, the distributor, and the one funding every single step of this journey. That means I have to be intentional with where my money goes.
Some authors will tell you that paying for reviews is “just part of the business.” But here’s the problem — it’s not always worth it. You might get a nice blurb, but is it authentic? Does it connect with real readers who will actually buy your book or follow your work long-term?
The Problem With Paid Reviews
When you pay for a review, you’re often paying for access, not genuine interest. And let’s be real — paid reviews can feel like fake connections. They might boost your numbers temporarily, but they don’t necessarily build your readership.
For indie authors, authenticity matters. Readers can tell when your connections are real, and they can also tell when they’re not.
What I Focus On Instead
Instead of paying for reviews, I put my energy into:
Building genuine relationships with readers, other authors, and book influencers.
Networking in spaces that matter — both online and in person.
Leveraging free or low-cost opportunities to get my books in front of the right audience.
Final Thoughts
If you’re an indie author, remember: you don’t have to buy your way into legitimacy.
Focus on building a strong foundation, connecting with your audience authentically, and letting your work speak for itself.
